Part Two

The sedan swerved into a narrow alleyway, its taillights blinking twice before vanishing into the mist. Emma tensed, gripping the wheel as she rolled past the turn, giving the illusion of disinterest. She waited precisely five seconds—long enough to avoid suspicion—before glancing at Jake.
“Did you get that?” she whispered.
Jake was already typing furiously. “Yeah. He just entered a restricted zone. Security feeds are scrambled—someone doesn’t want eyes on this place.”
Emma’s pulse quickened. Regardless of who their target was meeting, they had high-level protection. That meant their operation was bigger than an exchange—it could be a full-fledged conspiracy.
She took a sharp right, parking in a darkened corner outside an old gas station. The scent of rain and gasoline thickened the air. “We’re gonna need eyes on the ground.”
Jake nodded, retrieving a miniature drone from his kit. With a flick of his wrist, the device hummed to life and zipped into the damp night, weaving effortlessly between buildings. He watched the monitor intently as the drone approached the warehouse.
Emma leaned closer, her breath hot with anticipation. The feed flickered—then sharpened. Inside the warehouse, figures moved in the dim glow of industrial lamps. Pallets stacked high with crates bore markings from companies she recognised. Some were legitimate businesses…others were fronts.
Jake’s jaw clenched. “They’re smuggling something—could be weapons, could be data.”
A low buzz interrupted them—a new signal had activated.
Emma’s eyes darted to the screen. Their target was speaking, but the audio feed was garbled. Then, suddenly, one clear phrase cut through the static.
“…we move at midnight.”
Emma met Jake’s gaze. The pieces clicked into place. This wasn’t just an exchange. It was an operation, and they had less than four hours to stop it.
She flexed her fingers over the ignition. “Looks like we’re working overtime.”

As Emma and Jake debated their next move, a sharp knock against the car window made them both freeze. Emma’s fingers instinctively hovered over her sidearm, but Jake had already rolled down the window just enough to peer outside.
A woman stood beneath the neon flicker of the gas station sign. Her trench coat was soaked from the rain, but her stance was unwavering, calculating.
“Agent Riley,” she said, flashing a badge before shoving it back into her pocket. “You two are deep in something dangerous.”
Emma narrowed her eyes. “And you would be?”
“Call me Tess. I’ve been tracking this syndicate for months,” she replied, stepping closer, lowering her voice. “But you’re about to blow my cover if you don’t rethink your approach.”
Jake exhaled slowly. “You’re deep undercover?”
Tess nodded. “I infiltrated their ranks. And what did you see back there? That’s just the tip of the iceberg.”
Emma exchanged a glance with Jake—this changed everything.
“You need to step back,” Tess warned. “Because if they realise they’re being watched, this entire operation burns—and I go down with it.”
The rain intensified, drumming against the car roof. Emma took a breath, assessing the unknown agent. Was Tess an ally—or just another complication?
Jake shook his head, skeptical. “We’ve got four hours before something big moves. If you have intel, now’s the time.”
Tess hesitated for just a fraction too long. Then, with a glance over her shoulder, she sighed.
“They’re planning a transport,” she murmured. “Encrypted data, high-value shipments, possible hostages. You want in? Then follow me.”
Emma tightened her grip on the steering wheel, pulse quickening. This had just turned into something far bigger than a simple surveillance op.
And she wasn’t about to walk away now.

Welcome to In the heart of London – Surveillance at a glance…

I often find myself chatting with people outside the industry who think covert operations are all about excitement and adventure. While they might have that “cool factor,” the truth is that they aren’t really fun or glamorous. They’re more about strategy and achieving specific goals, and they can be costly, risky, and a bit of a hassle. That said, anyone in this field ends up with some pretty interesting—and sometimes hilarious—stories over the years. Let me share just a little taste of those experiences!

In the heart of London – Surveillance at a glance… including Operation Byzantium, refers to monitoring conducted in a way that ensures the subject remains unaware they are being observed. It is categorised into two types: directed surveillance and intrusive surveillance.
