Shadows in Motion – Part Nine: The Ambush Protocol
The moment Vance crushed the mic, the bar’s atmosphere shifted. The jazz stopped. The lights dimmed further. And the exits—both front and rear—clicked shut with magnetic locks.
Emma’s hand slid to her sidearm beneath the table. Jake, across the room, was already moving—slowly, carefully—toward the emergency panel near the fire exit. Tess didn’t move at all. She just stared at Vance.
He raised his glass in mock salute. “You always were predictable, Tess.”
Emma’s blood ran cold. “He knows.”
Vance stood, the black case still on the table. “You thought this was about smuggling? About stolen tech?” He leaned in. “This is about control. Information is the new weapon. And I’ve just sold the launch codes.”
The woman beside him—Nyx—stood as well, revealing a sleek sidearm holstered beneath her coat. “MI5’s been bleeding secrets for months,” she said in a low, accented voice. “You just never noticed the wound.”
Jake reached the panel—only to find it rigged with a silent alarm. “They’ve locked us in.”
Tess finally moved. Slowly. Deliberately. She stepped away from the bar and toward Vance.
Emma’s voice cracked through the comms. “Tess, what are you doing?”
Tess didn’t answer. She reached into her coat and pulled out a small device—an encrypted key fob. She placed it on the table beside the case.
Vance smiled. “I knew you’d come around.”
Then Tess looked at Emma. And blinked twice.
Jake’s voice hissed in her ear. “That’s the signal. She’s still with us.”
Emma didn’t hesitate.
She flipped the table, drew her weapon, and fired.
The room exploded into chaos.
Vance ducked, Nyx returned fire, and Tess dove for the case. Jake shattered the fire panel with a chair, triggering the emergency override. Alarms wailed. Smoke grenades hissed from the ceiling vents—Tess’s backup plan.
Emma tackled Nyx, the two women crashing through a table. Vance bolted for the rear exit, but Jake intercepted him, slamming him into the wall.
Tess grabbed the case and shouted through the smoke, “We’ve got sixty seconds before this place goes dark!”
Emma cuffed Nyx, blood trickling from her temple. “Then let’s vanish.”

Outside – 22:29
They emerged into the alley, coughing, bruised, but alive. Sirens wailed in the distance—MI5’s rapid response en route.
Jake held up the case. “We got it.”
Tess wiped blood from her lip. “And now we know who’s pulling the strings.”
Emma looked back at the burning bar. “This isn’t over.”
Tess nodded. “No. It’s just begun.”
