Operation Sandalwood – Chapter Nine

The sirens grew louder, a chorus of distant wails swallowed by the vast, silent mountains. Jake and Emma, a pair of exhausted shadows, moved through the rugged terrain, their heavy boots crushing the heather beneath their feet. They didn’t look back. They didn’t need to. The glow of flashing blue and red lights in the valley below told them all they needed to know. The world was arriving to clean up the mess they had just prevented.

They abandoned the 4×4 in a small, forgotten village, a final ghost in the machine of their mission. For three days, they made their way south, a silent journey back to the world they had just saved, but which they could no longer be a part of. They didn’t talk about the close calls, the freezing cold, or the chilling final words of The Architect. The unspoken understanding between them was more profound than any conversation could be.

Back in London, they remained ghosts. Their first step was to get the information to the right person. They couldn’t walk into MI5 headquarters. Instead, they used a pre-arranged dead drop—a hidden compartment in a disused library locker that only they and one other person knew about. A single, encrypted USB drive contained all of it: The Nightingale’s file, the data from Oakington Barracks, and the complete schematics for Project Cerberus.

The next morning, Director Hayes found the drive. She unlocked its contents in a secure room, her face a mask of stone as she read the full, impossible story. She sent a single, coded message to a burner phone she knew they were still using: “The lion will be at the gate at midnight. Alone.”

The meeting took place in an old, forgotten park near Regent’s Canal. Hayes stood by the water’s edge, a silhouette against the city lights. Jake and Emma emerged from the shadows, their presence as silent and unsettling as ever. Hayes didn’t offer a handshake or a smile. She looked at them, and in her eyes was a mixture of fury, relief, and grudging respect.

“You went rogue,” Hayes said, her voice low and dangerous. “You risked everything. Your careers, your lives. You had no authority.”

“We had no choice,” Emma replied, her voice steady. “He was in the system. The only way to stop him was to operate outside of it.”

Hayes nodded slowly. “The data you provided is already being analyzed. We’re working to cover every digital footprint he left. The world thinks we stopped a sophisticated cyberattack from a foreign power. It’s a cleaner story.” She paused, her gaze fixed on Jake. “And The Architect? The file you sent said you didn’t kill him. What happened?”

“We didn’t,” Jake said. “We left him for the local police, in a small town. A man in a suit, tied up and with a severe concussion, in the middle of a field. He was a puzzle they couldn’t solve. He’s been moved to a black site now. He’s a ghost, just like us.”

Hayes looked from one to the other, seeing not two of her agents, but two survivors of a war no one knew was fought.

“The operation is officially closed,” Hayes said, the words a final, heavy seal. “Unofficially, of course. Everything from the last three weeks is scrubbed. You both have a choice. Disappear and start over, or come back. We’ll find a place for you. But you will forever be on the fringe. The old rules, the old teams—they’re gone. You’re a unit of two now, and that won’t change.”

Jake and Emma looked at each other. They didn’t need to speak. They had already made their choice, weeks ago, in the back of a van in London. They had chosen to operate in the shadows, and that was where they would stay.

“We’ll be in touch,” Jake said, the words a promise of their continued existence in the dark.

Hayes gave a curt nod. She watched them disappear into the night, their forms swallowed by the London mist, two phantoms returning to their rightful place. The operation was over. The world was safe. But for Jake and Emma, a new kind of war was just beginning. They were the shadows who had defeated a ghost, and they would be ready for the next one.

Welcome to In the heart of London – Surveillance at a glance…

I often find myself chatting with people outside the industry who think covert operations are all about excitement and adventure. While they might have that “cool factor,” the truth is that they aren’t really fun or glamorous. They’re more about strategy and achieving specific goals, and they can be costly, risky, and a bit of a hassle. That said, anyone in this field ends up with some pretty interesting—and sometimes hilarious—stories over the years. Let me share just a little taste of those experiences!

In the heart of London – Surveillance at a glance… including Operation Byzantium, refers to monitoring conducted in a way that ensures the subject remains unaware they are being observed. It is categorised into two types: directed surveillance and intrusive surveillance.
