OPERATION NIGHTGLASS — PHASE THREE DOSSIER

Codename: BLACK HARBOR

1. Phase Three Objective

Phase Three begins the moment LOCKSTEP extracts the contents of Unit 47. The objective now shifts from observation to interpretation and interception.

MI5 must determine:

  • Why SABLE left the item
  • Who it is meant for
  • What message triggers next
  • Whether London is the stage or merely the opening act

This phase is strategic counter‑intelligence — the part where the shadows start talking back.

2. What LOCKSTEP Found Inside the Cache

Inside Unit 47, LOCKSTEP discovered a single metal case, cold to the touch, unmarked, and secured with a simple latch — no traps, no tech, no theatrics.

Inside the case:

A. A Photograph

Black‑and‑white. Taken in the late 1980s. Four people standing outside a nondescript building in East Berlin.

One face is unmistakably SABLE. Another is circled in red ink.

The circled man is identified by QUILL as Arthur Hale, a former MI5 officer who disappeared in 1993.

Officially: presumed dead. Unofficially: never found.

B. A Train Ticket

A modern ticket. Destination: Dover Priory. Departure: Tomorrow, 06:40.

C. A Note

Handwritten, Cyrillic script. Translated by LANTERN:

“The debt is due. The truth must surface.”

No signature.

3. Phase Three Mission Plan

A. Surveillance Shift

SABLE is no longer the only target. The operation now expands to include:

  • Anyone connected to Arthur Hale
  • Anyone boarding the 06:40 to Dover
  • Anyone attempting to intercept SABLE before it reaches the coast

B. Field Deployment

4. Phase Three Narrative Chapter

(Full spy‑thriller style, cinematic, atmospheric)

CHAPTER: THE TRAIN TO DOVER

Time: 05:58 Location: London St Pancras, Platform 12

The station is half‑awake — the kind of early morning where the lights feel too bright and the air too cold. HARRIER stands among the commuters, collar up, coffee cooling in his hand. His earpiece crackles softly.

LANTERN: “Shadowfall confirmed. SABLE just entered the station. East entrance.”

HARRIER turns casually. SABLE moves like a ghost through the crowd — slow, deliberate, invisible unless you know where to look.

HARRIER: “Visual acquired. GHOSTPACK, positions.”

Three plain vehicles shift in the surrounding streets, engines humming low.

SABLE approaches the ticket barriers. He doesn’t scan a ticket. He simply waits. A moment later, a woman in a grey coat steps beside him and taps her card. The barrier opens for both of them.

QUILL: “Unknown female. No match yet. Possible courier.”

OVERWATCH (calm, controlled): “Do not engage. Observe only.”

SABLE and the woman board the 06:40 train. Carriage 4.

HARRIER follows, taking a seat two rows behind.

The train pulls out.

Onboard — 06:52

The woman hands SABLE a small envelope. He doesn’t open it. He simply nods.

HARRIER (quietly): “Glassbreak. Handoff confirmed.”

LANTERN: “Working on facial recognition… standby…”

A pause. Then:

LANTERN: “Match found. The woman is Elena Hale. Daughter of Arthur Hale.”

The carriage seems to shrink around HARRIER.

HARRIER: “OVERWATCH, please confirm.”

OVERWATCH: “Confirmed. Continue surveillance. Do not lose them.”

SABLE finally opens the envelope.

Inside is a single key — identical to the one from Unit 47, but with a different cut.

He pockets it.

The train begins to slow as it approaches Dover.

QUILL: “He’s heading for a second cache. Likely near the docks.”

OVERWATCH: “All teams, Phase Three is active. Prepare for BLACK HARBOR.”

The train brakes screech. The doors hiss open. SABLE steps onto the platform.

And for the first time since the operation began…

He looks directly at HARRIER.

Not startled. Not alarmed. Just aware.

As if he’s known all along.

About

Welcome to In the heart of London – Surveillance at a glance…

I often find myself chatting with people outside the industry who think covert operations are all about excitement and adventure. While they might have that “cool factor,” the truth is that they aren’t really fun or glamorous. They’re more about strategy and achieving specific goals, and they can be costly, risky, and a bit of a hassle. That said, anyone in this field ends up with some pretty interesting—and sometimes hilarious—stories over the years. Let me share just a little taste of those experiences!

In the heart of London – Surveillance at a glance… including Operation Byzantium, refers to monitoring conducted in a way that ensures the subject remains unaware they are being observed. It is categorised into two types: directed surveillance and intrusive surveillance.
