The latest release of files from MI5

A collection of previously classified documents from MI5 has been released.

These records span a variety of topics, primarily focusing on the organization’s early years before World War I, up to the mid-1970s.

The released files unveil new information regarding the Cambridge spies Kim Philby, Anthony Blunt, and John Cairncross, including their confessions. They also provide insight into related cases, such as Constantin Volkov and Philby’s first wife, Litzi.

Additionally, the collection features historical reports and documents from 1909 to 1959, a wartime “watchers” manual offering surveillance advice for MI5 officers, papers related to investigations into the Communist Party of Great Britain, and exchanges between MI5 and the FBI.

All the available files can be explored, viewed, and downloaded from Discovery, our catalogue, here.

About

Welcome to In the heart of London – Surveillance at a glance…

I often find myself chatting with people outside the industry who think covert operations are all about excitement and adventure. While they might have that “cool factor,” the truth is that they aren’t really fun or glamorous. They’re more about strategy and achieving specific goals, and they can be costly, risky, and a bit of a hassle. That said, anyone in this field ends up with some pretty interesting—and sometimes hilarious—stories over the years. Let me share just a little taste of those experiences!

In the heart of London – Surveillance at a glance… including Operation Byzantium, refers to monitoring conducted in a way that ensures the subject remains unaware they are being observed. It is categorised into two types: directed surveillance and intrusive surveillance.
